He was known worldwide as Pepe Mujica for his past as a Tupamaro guerrilla, his nearly 15 years in prison during the military dictatorship, and his subsequent rise to president of Uruguay (2010-2015). He gained international notoriety for his austere lifestyle, donating much of his salary and living on a modest farm, earning him the nickname "the poorest president in the world." A key figure of the Latin American left, Mujica left a legacy marked by his humanist discourse, his critique of consumerism, and his fight for social justice. He died at the age of 89 from cancer.
